Astrological Art: Arachne

Before you assume that the artwork below was created today for Day 2 of “The Astrological Illustration of the Day: 30 Day Art Challenge,” let me assure you, (a) it was not, and (b) such artwork is coming, but a little later. This is because I decided to use watermedia and you know how that is. Paper has to dry and I do not own a craft dryer. So you’ll have to wait a bit…

In the meantime and in light of yesterday’s musings about Alzheimer’s, astrology and art, I’ll leave you to ponder on a drawing from about six months ago which just yesterday named itself.

According to mythology, Arachne was this Greek mortal who boasted her weaving talents surpassed those of any goddess. As you might imagine, Athena, the head goddess (who prided herself on her own weaving abilities), got pissed and turned Arachne into a spider to punish her for her insolence.

In astrology the asteroid Arachne 407 is associated with complicated interactions, entanglements, “the web we weave,” entrapment, and other spidery associations. More interesting to me is astrologer Jem Neal’s observations that asteroid Arachne 407 appears to be a marker for dementia.

Yesterday while messing around with my mother’s chart, the artwork you see above came to mind. “Arachne,” it whispered in my ear. And that’s why you are seeing it here now.
